Mayka: Interim Shelter
Mayka means, in the Indian language, My Mother’s Home. Under this program, providing interim shelter to single moms with young kids who are facing homelessness and need temporary shelter while they move to a shelter home or alternate arrangement. We have partnered with YMCA and we are working with their clients to provide shelter in hotels till they get a long-term arrangement.
One hotel night on an average cost us $100 per room pr night. The stay can range between one week to one month and you could help us donate more room nights so we can help mothers with younger kids to stay inside and safe. It really breaks our heart to see young kids and even infants on the streets exposed to high risk of their lives. This is even applicable to various section 8 housing approval families where it takes longer to get apartments and forces them to be homeless for a while.
Once these families find shelter, we help them provide necessary household items, furniture, clothing, toys etc. that helps them to have a place called “Home”.
Our program also provides mental health support as it is very stressful for single moms to be out on the street with kids and face this unwanted situation in life and be in a vulnerable state.
Our future plan is to have our own facility for an interim shelter, and we request donors to come forward and support this program.
